So with my recent OSS phase, I’ve started playing around with new and unfamiliar applications, one of which includes Inkscape.

The latest version, 0.44 has significant improvements over the previous 0.43 version. The most notable is the inclusion of a Layers palette, which I think has made it more usable. While there is an increase in performance, it’s still slightly sluggish with the redraw on Windows. It performs much faster on Linux and that’s where I prefer working with Inkscape.
What drew me to this application is it’s focus on the SVG file format. An SVG file is directly usable on the web, unlike the native formats of Photoshop and Illustrator. I’m trying to get a little more practice with it because sometimes raster just doesn’t cut it. Don’t get me wrong though, I love raster and it’s not going away.
